Jacksonville's newest additions...

Jerry Porter and Florence look to be key additions for Jacksonville in 2008.

Ok, as you know, Jacksonville is my squad. It's something I've dealt with since '95, and I love the team. Gritty, grimey, scrappy, and they are original.

Anyway, since the free agent period began, the Jaguars have been very active in acquiring WR Jerry Porter from the Oakland Raiders, DB Drayton Florence from the S.D. Chargers, QB Cleo Lemon from Miami (keeping the Jags tradition of black QBs alive; more on this later), and WR Troy Williamson from the Vikings, via a trade for a sixth round pick. Hopefully, this can solidify some depth issues in the secondary, and hopefully can rejuvenate a sad excuse of a receiving core. Jacksonville is going to miss Ernest Wilford (signed with Miami), but the truth of the matter is that Jacksonville's offense isn't geared towards hitting the receivers. If they decide over the off-season to make a more concerted effort to use the new WRs as playmakers, I do believe that the AFC Championship with a potential Super Bowl berth is within reason.

Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Needs

Defensive End - In my opinion, I believe that the Jags' front seven is strong enough to give anyone a problem in the NFL. However, when facing Peyton & the Colts andBrady & the Pats, let's face it; the Jags can't get to the QB. In the first round, there should be plenty of defensive ends that will still be available. Calais Campbell, the 6'8", 280 pound end out of Miami is an intriguing pick, as he's in the Julius Peppers mold. Quentin Groves out of Auburn is a high-motor end and could be just as effective with the Jags defensive schemes.

Safety - With the release of Sammy Knight (signed with the NY Giants on Monday), and the uncertain return of SS Gerald Sensabaugh, I think this could be a low risk/high reward opportunity for Jacksonville. In the first round, S Kenny Phillips from Miami could be a great complement to the roaming skills of last year's first round pick Reggie Nelson. DeJuan Morgan from NC State could be a steal of a pick in the third round with strong run-stopping skills and shown a nose for the ball.

Defensive Tackle - Now that steroid user Marcus Stroud is now a Buffalo Bill (not a slight, I liked Marcus, but I think it was smart by the Jags organization to cut bait while they were ahead), this is an opportunity to find a gap-shooting DT to complement the behemoth who is John Henderson. Trevor Laws from Notre Dame and Pat Sims from Auburn could be a quality addition in the second-third round to add depth to an already strong position for the Jags.

Quarterback - What? Didn't you see the year David Garrard had? Yes, I did. I also remember Byron Leftwich having similar success and the Jags immediately wanted to get rid of Mark Brunell. Then we also got Garrard from East Carolina. To me, this is a great opportunity to draft an Andre Woodson from Kentucky or a Josh Johnson from University of San Diego. Both fit the mold of a black QB, and provide great upside due to their mobility and fantastic arm strength. You can probably get Woodson in the fourth round. If you can't, you might have a steal in Johnson (posted a 4.5 40-time and performed well at the Senior Bowl) in the fifth-sixth round.

DJ Wolfe - Hey, I'd love to see Jacksonville draft my boy DJ Wolfe, safety out of Oklahoma. Standout tailback from The Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma (the greatest HS of all-time) and versatile player for the Sooners for four years, he would be a great add, and I might be able to get tickets to a game :)

Okay, I've been promising a 2008 NFL Draft article and NBA Trade Deadline article, but I'm sleepy. These articles will be out later in the week.
