Wow, that was an interesting week.
As you all know Ed had a bad day on Saturday. If you didn't know, Oklahoma failed to live up to its #1 ranking and lost to a much better than expected Texas team 45-35. Texas Longhorn QB Colt McCoy was truly amazing,, he made every throw and run Texas needed to win. You wouldn't know it by looking at the QB stats.
Colt McCoy - 28 of 35, 277 yards, 1 TD
Sam Bradford - 28 of 39 387 yards, 5 TDs, 2 INTs
However, sometimes stats don't tell the true story. Here is the truth about the Red River Rivalry, Oklahoma, and Texas.
This was one of the GREATEST Red River Rivalry games of all-time. Period. Big time scoring, stars, drama, and the unexpected all in one game. Definitely worth the price of admission. However, Oklahoma might've been exposed defensively. For one, the loss of star middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds (knee, out for the season) will be a major hindrance to the Sooner defense moving forward. Texas exposed the middle third all day and wore it out more than the JV Linebacker core with a gullable, unassuming freshman cheerleader.
Also, what the hell is wrong with Demarco Murray and the Oklahoma running game? That is a major issue and if Stoops doesn't get that figured out then its going to be tough sledding in the Big 12 moving forward. Texas has a fast defense, and a QB that can make any play. After seeing how some of the other top teams in the nation performed, Colt McCoy is the best player in America, ETSF certified.
So what do we make of all of this...well, after looking at the polls, Texas is #1 in the nation. Missouri comes at Texas next and should be smarting after losing to the NEW best football team in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State that is, the Cowboys dismantled the porous Mizzou defense and rattled Chase Daniel all night. Penn State looks mighty good after destroying a Wisconsin team that Ohio State struggled to get by. Florida's back on the national stage after pummeling LSU.
So here's my top 10 moving into next week.
#2. Penn State
#4. Oklahoma State
#10. Texas Tech
Lets look at my rankings. Texas has to be #1 after beating the previous, and more well established #1 than USC's victory over then #1 Ohio State. I put Penn State over Alabama for the style points they have beaten their foes such far. Oklahoma State could just as well be #2 after beating #3 Missouri. Oklahoma losing to the new #1 (Texas) puts them the highest ranking quality one-loss team ahead of Florida (lost to Ole Miss), USC (lost to Oregon State), and Georgia (losing to Alabama). Until BYU and Texas Tech beats someone of quality, then I can't put them ahead of any of the other power schools.
Moving on to the NFL slate. Big loss by the Cowboys as they lay a major egg to Arizona by losing 30-24. Arizona did everything they could TO LOSE this game and yet the blocked punt by Sean Morey sealed the deal. Cowboy fans, your team has looked especially crappy these last 3 games, don't say I didn't warn you. The O-Line is suspect, Romo put the ball on the ground 4 times, and Marion Barber almost saved the day. Dallas, here's the cure...RUN THE BALL! Now, Washington Redskins, after all the praised that's been heaped on you, you go and lose to the St. Louis Rams?? Your on my shit list. Big win for my Jacksonville Jaguars against the offensive powerhouse in the Denver Broncos. At 3-3, if Jacksonville can go on a run, we might be back in business. Same for those damn Indianapolis Colts. They destroyed the Ravens 31-3, the Ravens say never more to any type of believe into you from Ed The Sports Fan.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm still hurting from that Sooners loss. But I wanna give an award to JAG & Hookem63 for being The Most Congenial Readers of ETSF. Their commentary on our message boards is truly a wonder to behold. Me and Kenny will start to roll out are NBA predictions for 2008-09, and wrap up the League Championship Series as things are getting to the nitty gritty. Enjoy your week folks. Easy.
