College Football Fans...Check The Resumes

Okay, I have to defend myself, my favorite team, and the state of college football all in this one. College Football and the nation are up in arms over what's transpired on this Thanksgiving weekend. Many of you are probably just as upset as the pundits in the media. Well guess what...

I am upset too.

I'm upset that you're upset. I hate that it had to come to this. So I'm going to take a hard line and TRY to call it down the middle. Take the name away from some of these teams and take the emotion away from how you truly feel. Alabama is the only team in the nation that has no doubts on where they stand and they deserve (pending the SEC Championship. However, these are some emotional times this week. People are upset, frustrated, and downright lucky. Is the system showing favoritism? How much do you honestly factor in head-to-head matchups? Check the resume on the teams below as I've given you their accomplishments only, no names. You tell me who's the most deserving of anything.

Team A - Current record, 10-1. Defeated 3 teams currently in the Top 25 this season all by at least 14 points. Nonconference schedule includes victory against a BCS team currently ranked #10 in the nation. Pending one game this Saturday, will become a BCS Conference champion. Only loss came to a team currently unranked who is tied for second in their conference with an 8-4 record.

Team B - Current record, 11-1. Defeated 2 teams currently in the Top 25 this season, both of which by 30+ points. Nonconference schedule includes 3 victories against bowl eligible teams, 2 from BCS conferences. Pending one game this Saturday, will become a BCS Conference champion. Only loss came to a team currently ranked #22 and finished second in their conference's division with an 8-4 record.

Team C - Current record, 11-1. Defeated 3 teams currently in the Top 25 this season. Nonconference schedule includes 3 victories against non-BCS conferences. 2 non-conference victories are against bowl-eligible teams, one being a victory against a 6-6 BCS team. Only loss came to a team currently ranked #7 and finished tied for 1st in their conference's division with an 11-1 record.

Team D - Current record, 11-1. Defeated 4 teams currently in the Top 15 this season, all wins by 20+ points. Nonconference schedule includes 2 victories against teams currently in the top #15, one being a BCS conference champion. Pending one game this Saturday, will become a BCS Conference champion. Only loss came to a team currently ranked #3 and finished tied for 1st in their conference's division with an 11-1 record.

Team E - Current record, 11-1. Defeated 2 teams currently in the Top 25 this season. Nonconference schedule includes 2 victories against teams in BCS conferences. Only loss came to an unranked team that finished 4th in their conference with an 8-4 record.

Team F - Current record, 12-0. Defeated 2 teams currently in the Top 20 this season. Nonconference schedule includes 2 victories against teams in BCS conferences. Undefeated. Defeated the same team that Team A lost to this season, who has an 8-4 record.

Now...

Maybe you can figure out, maybe you can't. But look at the resumes of these teams, and you tell me who's proven the most. I understand you can't control your schedule, but if the system benefits those who have a stronger strength of schedule, then you've got to be proactive. Can you figure out the 6 teams? Please comment below and let the arguments truly begin. Be easy.

This why us smart people in the North East don't watch college football! I guarantee we'd watch if it was an 8 team playoff, which would mean tapping into a new market and more money for the schools. Make it happen!

It would be extremely simple to go to a four team playoff without changing the current system much at all.

Instead of designating one bowl to feature #1 vs. #2, make it two bowls with 1vs4 and 2vs3. Have the bowls rotate like they already do.

Then the two winners play a week later. How hard is that? The Championship Bowl already takes place after the other ones anyway.

Of course, this is still not the best way. However, an 8 team playoff is impossible before 2011, when the current deal expires. Also an 8 team playoff would require two extra games for the top two teams.

@Antone - Quit using the northeast as an excuse and be rational. An 8-team playoff would be great, and I've posted about that too. Take the 6 BCS Conference Champs + 2 at-larges and there you go.

@JAG - I like the 4 team playoff too, but who would be the 4 teams? Would you leave out USC? Florida if they lost? Texas? Texas Tech? Penn State?

Ed - You can't give conference champions an automatic bid in an 8 team playoff. Cincinnati Bearcats. I rest my case.

What if Missouri pulls an upset over... oops, never mind. I forgot who I was talking to for a second. If you want automatic bids, you would have to go to a sixteen team playoff and do away with conference championship games (Yeah, ok. That will happen when the sun rises in the west.)

Other than that, I agree with your 8 team plan. However, it's a pipe dream. I proposed the four team plan because it would have a better chance since it requires very little tinkering.

Yes, deserving teams would be left out in a four team format. But at least you would have two more eligible and a true championship game that would require a win instead of a poll to get access.

The 8-team plan is the most feasible, but since there are more than eight deserving teams, I'd like to see 16. Then again, there's the possiblity for chaos to happen, but who cares???

Four teams is out of the question. We know at least two would be left out (the other two from the BCS conferences), and I'm sure a case could be made for the other two that would be excluded.

    Soul on Ice,

(Great name, by the way. All praises to Eldridge)

I agree with you 100%. An eight team playoff would be better. A sixteen team would be even more fair.

However, I'm talking about getting away from fantasy and talking about something that could actually have a chance of happening. The college presidents and bowl commissioners are in collusion to keep the current system. A sixteen team playoff would require four extra games for the two finalists. The college presidents aren't going to let that happen.

Also, the bowls are concerned about their games being watered down. They want alumni to come and fill the hotel rooms and spend money. In an 8 team playoff, you're asking fans to travel up to three times. Not many can afford that.

All I'm saying is that instead of seeding the top two teams BEFORE the bowl games, why not do it after? You wouldn't even have to seed the top four teams as I previously suggested. Just play the bowl games in the traditional manner, then pick the top two teams for one extra game after that.

I know, I know, it's not that great and teams will be left out. But it's better than what we have now. On this issue, change will have to come in increments, not one big fell swoop.

Hopefully, by moving in the right direction, we'll eventually get where we need to be. (I know Brother Cleaver would not be happy with that statement but it's the best that I can do) :).

The post has a point...without a playoff of some kind it will never be fair. But I think a 8 team playoff is feasible (to go against what JAG said). Fans in some cases are just happy to have an chance to go to a great quality game. So the stadiums would still fill up and each game could still carry one of the bowl names. This also would get teams like Notre Dame out of automatic bowl mode. Teams would have to win, period.

Yes Jag, all hail Brother Eldridge Cleaver! I aint mad at cha for knowing some history, homie!

In a more practical sense, what you propose makes way more sense. Hopefully, the powers-that-be can get their minds correct, and make something happen. It just seems like this cannot be that damn difficult to put together. It's almost as if people are waiting until the bottom falls out, before they decide to change the system.

Again, lets be real here. The BCS will have their say on this. So lets map it out my proposed playoff was originally.

You take the 6 BCS conference champions, plus 2 at-larges with the provision that you must have 10 wins. This eliminates an ACC team and opens up 1 additional at-large. So who would be in the playoffs as of right now? Using the BCS rankings here you go...

    #1. Alabama (12-0) vs. #8 Cincinnati (10-2)
    #4. Flroida (11-1) vs. #5. USC (10-1)

    #3. Texas (11-1) vs. #6. Utah (12-0)
    #2. Oklahoma (11-1) vs. #7. Penn State (11-1)

You telling me that's not fair? Let the bowl games continue with geographical sites like they do NCAA...

By the way, who wins that potential bracket? That 4/5 game is a doozy!

Ed - We all love the idea. Too bad we're not the ones you have to convince.

A 12 game season, a conference championship game plus three playoff games is a 16 game NFL schedule (for two teams).

If you can get the universities to approve that, President-Elect Obama should kick Hillary to the curb and make you Secretary of State!

I so think that Tebow is overrated. I really wanted Ok and Texas to duke it out in the BCS Championship. Oh well...
