Better Late than Earlier this Year: The Longest Two Months and Change in Sports

For the past several years, the end of the basketball season brings that sense of uneasiness for me, as well as other sports fans. It’s that downtime between the end of basketball season and the start of football season. Sure, there’s baseball, but until September, it’s hard to get me to care about baseball. There have been tips to survive baseball season, tips to survive until football season, and even with those, it’s still hard to deal with. Even with all the preparation, once the time comes, it all goes down the drain, and what ends up being a couple of months waiting for football to start ends up feeling like an eternity.

Unlike others, the downtime started off surprisingly well this year. Between LeBronapalooza taking up a nice chunk of time, as well as the Rangers being worth a damn this season (I live in the Dallas area, so this means more to me, as well as folks around here), time was flying by, and there weren’t any complaints about football season needing to start right away. Of course, it’s always nice to have the season start, but there wasn’t a lot of complaining, because time was being occupied, sports-wise, and it was being done so to my satisfaction.

Then, it happened.

Honestly, I’m not sure exactly when "it" was, but there have been a series of sports-related events that have either been beaten to the ground, or just don’t matter to me. Sure, they matter to someone, because they’re being reported, but now the dead time before football season is excruciating. Here are some obvious ones:

Favre-a-palooza: as much as I love Lorenzo Favre, this off-season’s coverage seemed forced, and honestly, this is the one year when it doesn’t seem like he wants to be out there.

Margocheato v. Manny Pacquiao: self-explanatory, from a boxing post we ran not too long ago.

Manny Ramirez: Manny is afforded legendary status on our website, but even Manny
being put on waivers wasn’t enough to generate an interest in writing a post, diatribe, rant, or opinion piece on the man right now. I just don’t care.

Dallas Cowboys: the Cowboys have sucked all preseason, and the last preseason game against Miami will most likely be the culmination of the worst preseason in recent memory. It seems like it was better when I didn’t watch preseason at all, but tuning into these games have ended up making things worse.

USA Basketball: Ed’s expressed his concern, and it’s more than valid. Sure, they’re undefeated, but they’re not dominant at all. This team will have to “out-athlete” everyone to the championship, but this quest isn’t enough to enhance the downtime until September 7th.

Trust, there’s more that could be mentioned, but the point is this: once basketball season ends, sports purgatory begins, and this off-season, as delayed as the doom was, has still resulted in doom. Thank God that high school football started last weekend, and with college football on tap later this week, the nightmare that is the longest two months and change of the sports calendar is coming to an end.

HAS THIS OFF-SEASON BEEN DIFFERENT, BUT IS STILL ENDING UP DREADFUL FOR YOU AS WELL? ARE YOU BORED AS HELL WITH WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE SPORTS WORLD RIGHT NOW? ARE WE OVERREACTING? GET AT US!

You know my take — I can survive the overlapping offseason because, well, damn if I don't love baseball. But yes, I'm extremely excited that college football starts this week and the NFL next week.

By the way, what the hell has Texas done to Cliff Lee? That's not the man I miss dearly.

@ Joe - 'preciate that, brother.

@ The Rev - Man, I don't know what's going on with Lee, but I've had to go to bat for the man quite a bit down here. The man takes the mound every five days. He has, without fail, for his first ten starts.

Now we got people down here saying not to give him $20 million a year, because it would stunt the growth and hurt the Rangers' flexibility. Cliff Lee sucking is still better than any other pitcher the Rangers have, period. I'm still gonna root for the man with unbridled and unequal fervor.

Man I was just going to pop off about how crap-tastic Lee has been for the Strangers, but looks like I got beat to the punch. Ah well.

Thanks for putting the Cubs fan on the front picture too. Jerk. Salt in the wounds.
