This started all the way back in 1995.
Back in '95, then high school junior quarterback Michael Vick was hosted by redshirt freshman quarterback Donovan McNabb at Syracuse University. The coaches looked at Vick as a young McNabb. Fitted with a cannon arm, a phenomenal athlete, and instincts that only great quarterbacks have, they seemed like a match made in heaven.
Who knew it would take 14 years for them to truly be re-united.
If you're like me, you've read every article about how epic this battle between the now Donovan McNabb Redskins' vs. the used-to-be Donovan McNabb, then was Kevin Kolb's, and finally now Michael Vick led Eagles. You've listened to every interview, sports talk radio host, and even heard the fellas here chop it up on the greatness of McNabb and Vick.
Let's reflect and go back to '95, on the hallowed grounds of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and other legends of Syracuse University. To a conversation I imagine McNabb and Vick had.
McNabb: So, what do you think about Syracuse?
Vick: I like it, but its only October and its already cold. How cold does it get up here?
McNabb: We should probably change the subject, because this could go downhill really fast. What do you think of head coach Paul Pasqualoni's offense?
Vick: Man, they really let you do your thing out there. Throwing the ball down the field, rolling you out the pocket so you can make plays, that's exactly how I see myself I out there.
McNabb: It takes hard work brother. Watching film, listening to the coaches, staying focused. You think you can do that?
Vick: No doubt, but I'll be straight up...I'm trying to play as a freshman.
McNabb: (counts on his fingers) You plan on taking my spot? I got 3 years left? (laughs)
Vick: You getting old already man, I'm trying to play.
McNabb: I like your ambition brother, but you're going to have to take my spot. I'm not going to give it to you. However, if you keep that spirit it will get you far. Regardless of the decision you make on where to play football at, I'll tell you this. There isn't that many of "us" in the game, if you need me just know that I got you.
Vick: Yessir. One last question for you...
McNabb: What's up?
Vick: What are the women like at Syracuse?
McNabb: Oh boy. Ummm...focus brother, focus. (laughs).
In the course of the last 18 months we've seen McNabb re-recruit Vick to the Eagles, we've seen Donovan McNabb get Julius Caesar'd by his peers in Philadelphia and traded to the Washington Redskins. Moreover, we've seen the rise and subsequent fall of Kevin Kolb and the edification of one mercurial and loquacious Michael Vick.
Oh yeah, and the Redskins and the Eagles really don't like each other.
This game is going to mean so much to so many people, but in the grand scheme of things its just another game. Except its not. Folks want to continue to talk about the response Philadelphia Eagles fans will give Donovan McNabb, and to be honest I could care less. They've already sealed their fate over the past 11 years, the booing at the draft, the reckless banter directed towards #5, and the lack of support for a man when things got rough.
I know that's not representative of all Eagles fans, but to be honest the Eagles fans don't owe us a damn thing. I love their fans, and they shouldn't change who they are. McNabb never did, and I don't expect Vick too either.
This is a coronation of the best there ever was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be from two quarterbacks with a backstory that could be made into a movie.
Who do I have? Mac-5 all day, but I'm a Donovan McNabb apologist. I want both men to leave it all on the field and show the world how great they truly are. To me, that's all that matters.
But this isn't about me, its about you. So I'll put it to you the reader...who you got this Sunday, McNabb or Vick?
